Circular economy finance guidelines

The transition towards a circular economy is expected to generate multiple economic, social and environmental benefits. Financiers play an important role in accelerating this transition by facilitating finance for businesses and projects applying circular economy business models.
In December 2014 the FinanCE working group was founded by PGGM and brought together a group of organizations1 related to the world of finance that were interested in the transition to a more circular economy. The group was supported by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
For this publication the FinanCE members ABN AMRO, ING and Rabobank sought active support and feedback from all FinanCE Working Group Members. The overarching goal is to create and stimulate a common understanding of circular economy finance.
This common understanding will accelerate financing and investing in circular business models. Especially since the market lacks guidance on how to uniformly define and apply circular economy thinking.
These Circle Economy Finance Guidelines aim to enable, stimulate and develop the key role finance can play in the transition towards a circular economy.

Circular economy - a powerful force for climate mitigation

This report investigates how a more circular economy can contribute to cutting CO2 emissions. It explores a broad range of opportunities for the four largest materials in terms of emissions (steel, plastics, aluminium, and cement) and two large use segments for these materials (passenger cars and buildings). The key conclusion is that a more circular economy can make deep cuts to emissions from heavy industry: in an ambitious scenario, as much as 296 million tons CO2 per year in the EU by 2050, out of 530 Mt in total – and some 3.6 billion tonnes per year globally. Making better use of the materials that already exist in the economy thus can take EU industry halfway towards net-zero emissions. Moreover, doing so often is economically attractive. Initiatives for a more circular economy therefore deserve a central place in EU climate and industrial policy.

Renewable materials in the circular economy

Miljövinsterna med att recirkulera förnybara material borde få en mer framträdande roll i den cirkulära ekonomin. Det lyfter IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet fram i en rapport för företagen Essity, Ikea, Tetra Pak och Royal DSM. Rapporten har sammanställt ett antal exempel med livscykelanalyser som visar att förnybara material som till exempel trä, papper och textil kan minska miljöpåverkan, både när de används som råmaterial i stället för icke-förnybara material och när de återanvänds eller återvinns. Rapporten lyfter också fram behovet av att integrera begreppen cirkulär ekonomi och bioekonomi – som båda är avgörande för den svenska ekonomin.

The Circularity GAP report, 2018

Taking the United Nations' Emissions Gap Report as inspiration, teh Circularity Gap Report provides a framework and fact-base to measure and monitor progress in bridging the gap, year on year. Being able to track and target performance via the Global Circularity Metric will help us engage in uniform goal-setting and guide future action in the most impactful way.

Vad är cirkulär ekonomi?

Boken förklarar på ett lätt, konkret och inspirerande sätt Cirkulär Ekonomi med mängder av konkreta exempel och illustrationer. Den innhåller bland annat "värdetrappan" som visar hur den cirkulära ekonomin bevarar resurer med hög kvalitet som gör det lönsamt att återvinna och återanvända material.

För att återanvända och återvinna material med hög kvalitet, behövs cirkulär design. I kapitlet om cirkulär design finns bland annat Biomimik, som handlar om hur vi kan använda designlösningar från naturen.

En central del av den cirkulära ekonomin är att använda förnyelsebar energi, det tillsammans med smartare design och produktion minskar utsläppen av växthusgaser.

Den cirkulära kemin beskrivs som ett affärstrategiskt nav i den cirkulära ekonomin. Här föreslås istället nya kreativa arbetssätt där cirkulär ekonomi är målsättningen och hur giftfria varor kan skapa vinster för både företagen och samhället i stort.

Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the way we make things

"Reduce, reuse, recycle" urge everyine to do more with less in order to minimize damage. But as this visionary book argues, this approach perpetuates a one-way, "cradle to grave" manufacturing model that dates to the Industrial Revolution and casts off as much as 90 % of the materials it uses as waste, much of it toxic. Why not challenge the notion that human industry must inevitably damage the natural world? In fact, why not take nature itself as our model? A tree produces thousands of blossoms in order to create another tree, yet we do not consider its aboundance wasteful but safe, beautiful and highly effective; hence, "waste equals food" is the firts priciple the book sets forth. Products might be designed so that, after their useful life, they provide nourishment for something new - either as "biological nutrients" that circular within closed-loop industrial cycle, without being "downcycled" into low-grade uses.
